Coin History
Proof Trade Dollars were officially struck in the Philadelphia Mint every year from 1873 through 1883. The 1878 is a proof-only issue, although the Carson City and San Francisco Mints did deliver business strikes that year. Beginning in 1879, however, the only Trade Dollars produced in any United States coinage facility were proofs struck in Philadelphia for sale to collectors. As a rule, the later-date issues from the 1878-1883 era are more readily obtainable in today's market than the earlier deliveries, particularly in the highest grades, but the former's proof-only status means that they actually enjoy slightly stronger demand among buyers.
The proof Trade Dollar series ends with two unofficial, albeit extremely famous rarities. The 1884 and 1885 were not listed in the Mint director's report, and they do not appear to have been part of a regular issue. Only 10 examples of the proof 1884 Trade Dollar were struck, and the mintage of the proof 1885 is even lower at five pieces. These coins were unknown to the collecting community as a whole until 1908. Today, they are among the most eagertly sought coins in all of numismatics, and the appearance of an example in the market is always accompanied by considerable fanfare.
